Nigerian mobile money licences

Emmanuel Obaigbona, deputy director of the domestic payments division for the Central Nigerian Bank stated that 11 banks had applied for the new Mobile Money licences. He expects more to apply. Business Day suggests that First Bank of Nigeria and Ecobank are likely to be the first two to be granted the licences by the central bank. A trial of the mobile money service is scheduled to begin shortly in Lagos.

In a sensible move the Nigerian authorities have insisted that mobile operators must allow all mobile money services and cannot favour or advertise a subset of operators.
