Twitter stock symbol search

Twitter now allows a search of items on a a particular company by stock symbol. The search is achieved by preceding the stock symbol with the dollar sign. For example $barc gives you tweets referring to Barclays stock. Where the stock symbol appears in the tweet preceded with the dollar sign it becomes clickable, in the same way as a hyperlink, giving you all the results for the company.

Until now subject search and categorisation has been achieved by using the hashtag (#) in front of a word. The use of the dollar symbol has been called the 'cashtag'. The company Stock Twits has used this form of searching for some time although this has been within its specific financial site. The use by Twitter is likely to encourage more business and stock tip / information tweets.
